Clinical Information for Injectables & Fillers

Are You Suitable for Injectables & Fillers?

You may be suitable if

  • Dynamic Lines: You are bothered by "dynamic" lines that stay visible even when your face is at rest.
  • Volume Loss: You have noticed a loss of volume in the mid-face or a softening of the jawline.
  • Facial Symmetry & Enhancement: You wish to improve facial symmetry or subtly enhance the shape of your lips.
  • Delay Surgical Intervention: You want to delay the need for surgical intervention, such as a facelift or brow lift.

Alternatives

  • Fat Transfer: A surgical alternative where your own fat is harvested via liposuction and injected into the face for permanent volume restoration.
  • Surgical Lifting: For significant skin laxity, a Facelift or Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) may be the more appropriate long-term solution.

Avoiding Complications

  • Post-Injection Oedema (Swelling): It is normal for the treated area to appear slightly swollen for 24–48 hours. This is especially common in the lips, which are highly vascular and sensitive.

  • Ecchymosis (Bruising): Despite the use of fine needles and cannulas, tiny blood vessels can occasionally be disrupted, leading to minor bruising. This usually fades within a few days and can be easily covered with mineral make-up after 24 hours.

  • Localised Tenderness: You may feel a slight “aching” or sensitivity at the injection sites for a day or two as the product integrates with your natural tissues.

  • Asymmetry: Since the two sides of the face are never identical, one side may settle faster than the other, or muscles may respond at different rates. This is typically addressed at a follow-up appointment once the product has fully settled (usually after 14 days).

  • Brow or Eyelid “Heaviness”: When treating the upper face, the relaxing effect on the muscles can occasionally cause a temporary feeling of heaviness or a slight drop in the brow position. This is not permanent and resolves as the product naturally wears off.

  • Palpable Lumps or “Nodules”: In some cases, dermal filler may be felt as a small, firm area under the skin. These are often just small collections of the gel that resolve with gentle massage or as the product hydrates and softens over the first two weeks.

  • Vascular Occlusion: This is the most serious potential complication of dermal fillers, occurring if the gel accidentally enters or presses against a blood vessel, impeding blood flow.

  • Tyndall Effect: This is a rare blueish discolouration that can appear if filler is placed too superficially. It is harmless but may require the filler to be dissolved or adjusted.

  • Delayed Inflammatory Response: Very rarely, the body can react to a filler weeks or even months after the treatment, usually triggered by an illness or dental work. This appears as sudden swelling and is typically treated with a short course of anti-inflammatories or antibiotics.

  • Infection: While extremely rare due to sterile clinical protocols, any break in the skin carries a minimal risk. We advise patients not to touch the treated area for several hours to prevent bacteria from entering the injection points.

If you notice a bruise, you can apply a cold compress to the area for 10 minutes every hour. Avoiding blood-thinning supplements like Vitamin E, Ginseng, and Garlic for a few days before and after treatment also helps.

It is recommended to wait for at least 14 days before considering a top-up. This allows all swelling to subside and the product to fully integrate, ensuring the area isn't over-filled.

Dermal fillers are visible immediately, though final results are best seen after 2 weeks once swelling has gone. Anti-wrinkle treatments take 10 to 14 days to reach their full effect.

We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, saunas, and steam rooms for at least 24 hours to prevent increased swelling or the migration of the product.

Injectables typically last 3 to 4 months. Dermal fillers last longer, usually between 6 and 18 months, depending on the area treated and your individual metabolism.

Most patients describe the sensation as a quick "pinch" or "sting." Very fine needles are used and numbing cream can be applied to ensure the experience is as comfortable as possible.
