Skin Reconstruction using grafts and flaps is a specialised surgical technique used to close large wounds or “defects” that cannot be stitched back together in a simple straight line, often following skin cancer removal or trauma. A skin graft involves taking a thin layer of healthy skin from a “donor site” (like the thigh or behind the ear) and transplanting it to the wound, whereas a skin flap involves moving a thicker section of nearby tissue that remains attached to its original blood supply. While grafts are ideal for flat surfaces, flaps are preferred for complex areas like the nose or eyelids because they provide better volume, colour matching, and a more robust healing process by bringing their own live circulation to the site.
